Santo Domingo with Kids: A Plan That Really Works

Caves with turquoise lagoons, a huge zoo, a little train in the botanical garden, and ice cream at the end: a tried-and-true itinerary for a family weekend.

Santo Domingo with Kids: A Plan That Really Works

Going out with kids in Santo Domingo has a trick: alternate wonder and rest. Lots of the first, enough of the second, and strategic snacks. This plan delivers.

Saturday Morning: Los Tres Ojos

Few things impress a child (and an adult) as much as descending a stone staircase and finding three underground turquoise lagoons. The Los Tres Ojos National Park can be explored in an hour and a half, and the hand-pulled raft crossing to the fourth lake — hidden in the open air — is the highlight of the day. Go early: there is shade, but the morning coolness is appreciated.

Saturday Afternoon: Zoo

The National Zoo Park is huge — over a million square meters — so the strategy is the internal train: it makes a full loop and then you walk again what you liked the most. The flamingos and the native species area usually win the family vote.

Sunday Morning: Botanical Garden

The National Botanical Garden is the quiet weekend outing: the little train goes around the entire park, the floral clock is a must-stop for photos, and the Japanese garden feels like another country. If you prefer to bike or skate, Mirador Sur Park is plan B with bike lanes and kilometers of shade.

Sunday Afternoon: Indoor Plan

When the heat hits (or it rains), end the day at Ágora Mall: snack at the food court, an ice cream from Helados Bon, and a movie at the cinema on the fourth floor. Check the listings before you go and buy good seats.

Quick tips: bring small cash for park entries, insect repellent for Los Tres Ojos, and always water. And if one day the nap wins, no problem: the What to Do section has plenty of ideas to make another plan.
