The Most Photogenic Places in Punta Cana

A turquoise cenote in the middle of the jungle, a wild beach with surfers and the palm trees of Juanillo: five stops to fill your camera roll in Punta Cana.

Punta Cana is photogenic by default: any photo with the sea behind you turns out well. But if you want pictures that do not look like everyone else's, you have to leave the resort. A few miles from the hotels there is a wild beach with waves, a cenote so blue it looks retouched, lagoons hidden in a forest and one of the prettiest beaches in the country.
This five-stop route can be split over two days. The rule of light applies here more than anywhere: in the morning the sea is more turquoise and the beaches emptier. At sunset, the backlit palm trees win.
Macao Beach

The area's wild public beach, with no hotels crowding the sand. Real waves, surfers, palm trees and a cliff at one end that gives the best panorama. It is the opposite of the resort photo: a sea with character and golden sand. There are surf schools and fried-fish shacks, so you can make a day of it.
Hoyo Azul

A freshwater cenote at the foot of a cliff, inside Scape Park, in Cap Cana. The turquoise is so intense it looks unreal, and that is without a filter. You reach it after a walk of about fifteen to twenty minutes through tropical vegetation, which makes for good photos too. You can swim: the best shot is from the water, looking up at the rock wall.
Juanillo Beach

Cap Cana's postcard: white sand, calm turquoise water and a row of leaning palm trees that seem placed for the photo. It is a quiet, secluded beach, with parking. Go early to get the palms without people, and stay for lunch at one of the restaurants on the shore.
Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve

A protected forest with crystal-clear freshwater lagoons, hidden inside Puntacana Resort & Club. Shaded trails, wooden walkways and lagoons you can swim in. The light filtering through the trees gives photos very different from the beach ones: green, intimate and cool.
Bávaro Beach

The beach that made Punta Cana famous: miles of white sand, turquoise water sheltered by the reef and palm trees as far as you can see. It is the classic photo, and for good reason. The best moment is first thing in the morning, with the sun rising over the sea and the beach still empty.
Tips for the route
- Hoyo Azul and Juanillo are both in Cap Cana and combine well in a single day.
- Bring a waterproof phone pouch: the best cenote and lagoon photos are taken from the water.
- On public beaches, do not leave your gear unattended while you swim.
