The capital is less than an hour away via the highway. The morning is spent walking among the Catedral Primada de América, Alcázar de Colón, Calle Las Damas, and the pedestrian street El Conde. The afternoon usually ends at Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, the underground lagoons on Av. Las Américas crossed by hand-pulled raft.

Cueva de las Maravillas y Altos de Chavón

Two stops about half an hour from Juan Dolio. The Cueva de las Maravillas, in San Pedro de Macorís, is explored via illuminated walkways among hundreds of Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs, with an elevator and guided tour. Altos de Chavón is the stone village built over the Chavón River canyon in Casa de Campo, featuring a Greek amphitheater and artisan workshops.
