The Sea Beyond: Diving, Whales, and Horseback Riding from Juan Dolio
· Equipo TuCiudad
A reef just minutes from shore, sunken ships now coral, whale season from January to March, and sunset horseback rides: the coast seen from the water.
Juan Dolio is enjoyed from the sand, but what sets it apart from the rest of the coast lies offshore: a reef that breaks the waves just meters away—making the water so calm—and beyond that, sunken ships that have been turning into coral for decades.
Diving: reef first, shipwrecks later
The reef dive in this bay is easy: little current, moderate depth, and plenty of marine life for being so close to shore. The area's shipwrecks—the Tanya V being the most famous—are at recreational depths and are now structures covered in hard and soft coral, with fish living inside. The best time to dive is from December to May, when the south wakes calm and the water clears.
The area's hub is Shark Juan Dolio Diver in Guayacanes, which offers both reef and shipwreck dives as well as beginner dives for those who have never used a tank.
Whales: mid-January to late March
Humpbacks don't pass directly here, but Juan Dolio is a convenient base for whale watching: the season in Samaná Bay runs from January 15 to March 31, peaking in February, and several agencies depart from this coast with transportation included. Juan Dolio Whale Watch and Juan Dolio - Samana Tours & Haitises organize full-day trips that usually include Cayo Levantado or El Limón Waterfall.

Sunset Horseback Riding
The most underrated activity in the area: Juan Dolio Horseback Riding offers horseback rides along the shore late in the afternoon, when the sun is setting and the beach empties. It's short, suitable for all ages, and one of the highest-rated experiences in town.

Full-Day Excursions
From here, you can reach Isla Saona, the Cueva de las Maravillas, or the capital city in a single day, and local agencies sell these tours with hotel pickup: Excursiones Rachelly, Pedro Díaz Tours, and Maria Rigamonti Eldorado Travel, among others. The full list is at Tours.
If the Sea Wakes Rough
This mostly happens between August and November. The backup plan on land includes the area's two golf courses, Guavaberry Golf and Country Club and Metro Country Club, or a relaxed afternoon at the Bulevar.
Quick plan: dive or snorkel early before the wind picks up; horseback ride at sunset; and if you visit between January and March, book your Samaná trip days in advance as it gets busy. Everything else is at Qué Hacer.
