Fishing boats in Guayacanes, miles of palm-lined sand and a golf course facing the Caribbean: five stops for your camera in Juan Dolio.

The Most Photogenic Places in Juan Dolio

Juan Dolio has no monuments or museums, and it does not need them. Its thing is the sea: a long coast of pale sand and calm water that changes character every few hundred yards. At one end, a fishing village with colorful boats; at the other, golf courses and towers facing the Caribbean.

This five-stop route takes a morning and an afternoon, without leaving town. Light rules: the first hour of the morning gives the best photos of the day to early risers, with an empty beach and a calm sea, and at sunset the sky turns pink behind the palm trees.

The fishing village next to Juan Dolio, and the corner with the most character in the area. Colorful boats pulled up on the sand and fried-fish stands facing the sea. It is the most reviewed beach in the area and the most authentic photo: go in the morning, when the fishermen come back.

The main beach: a long strip of pale sand, calm water sheltered by the reef and palm trees that give shade and framing. You can walk it end to end for more than an hour. The classic photo is first thing in the morning, with soft light and an empty beach.

The best-kept stretch of the coast, in front of Club Hemingway. Wide sand, turquoise water and the outline of the buildings in the background, which gives it a different feel from the rest. A good place for afternoon photos, when the sun drops and the sea turns silver.

The most photogenic green in the area: a golf course with wide fairways and tropical vegetation, a few minutes from the beach. You do not need to play to enjoy it; the clubhouse and its surroundings are enough for a good shoot, especially in the low afternoon light.

The promenade where the town gathers: restaurants, terraces and people strolling in the early evening. This is the atmosphere shot, the one that tells how life is lived here. Go between five and seven, when the lights come on and there is still some sky.

Tips for the route

  • Get up early at least once: the empty beach in the first light is Juan Dolio's best photo.
  • On weekdays the beaches are almost empty; on Sundays, full of life and color.
  • A few minutes' drive away is the Cueva de las Maravillas, with hundreds of Taíno pictographs, if you want to add a different kind of stop.
